Wetmore's evaluation of the lake's waterfowl production potential was also considerably more conservative than Leopold's. He tallied fewer than three-hundred pairs of nesting ducks using the lake in 1918, of which the gadwall (sixty pairs), ruddy duck (fifty-five pairs), mallard (forty pairs), and redhead (thirty pairs) were the most common.

He still believed that predator control was an important game-management tool, and at the annual American Game Conference in New York in 1920 he made a strong pitch for the extermination of wolves and mountain lions throughout the Westa position he would later come to regret. Leopold's midthirties were a time of introspection and broadening interest in cultural pursuits. His reading, always prodigious, increased in volume and in scope. He was by then an accomplished writer in his own right, publishing polished essays on wildlife conservation, landscape change, and wilderness in the journals and magazines of the day.

To communicate the importance of these problems and their solutions to the forest rangers working under him, Leopold edited and distributed a newsletter, The Carson Pine Cone, thus beginning a life-long effort to instill his conservation ideas in others through the use of the written word. Fate, however, took an unforeseen turn. In April 1913, while on a range inspection of the overgrazed Jicarilla unit of the Carson, Leopold came down with a life-threatening kidney infection. He was off work for eighteen months and forced to abandon his forest stewardship.
