The Army's skill to fulfill public and congressional calls for to wreck expeditiously all the U.S. declared chemical guns will be more desirable by means of the choice and acquisition of applicable explosive destruction applied sciences (EDTs) to enhance the most applied sciences for use to wreck the chemical guns at present on the Blue Grass military Depot (BGAD) in Kentucky and the Pueblo Chemical Depot (PCD) in Colorado. the military is thinking about 4 EDTs for the destruction of chemical guns: 3 from deepest region proprietors, and a fourth, Army-developed explosive destruction procedure (EDS). This e-book updates past reviews of those applied sciences, in addition to the other achievable detonation applied sciences, in response to numerous concerns together with technique adulthood, method efficacy, strategy throughput, technique protection, public and regulatory acceptability, and secondary waste matters, between others. It additionally offers special details on all of the requisites at BGAD and PCD and charges all the latest compatible EDTs plus the Army's EDS with admire to how good it satisfies those standards.

However, the stored H mustard agent has deteriorated over time, and its physical properties are highly variable. H is the only form of mustard agent stored at Blue Grass Army Depot. Mustard imately 32,000 projectiles containing H, GB, or VX. Neither the GB or VX projectiles at BGAD contain bursters. Table 1-1 provides a more detailed description of the munitions. All munitions are stored on pallets in igloos (rockets are inside their SFTs), and the igloos are monitored to detect any leakers. The leakers are stored in overpacks and are treated separately from the remaining munitions.

The resulting temperature, pressure, and fireball destroy the agent and explosives. This type of process is called “cold” detonation because the chamber is at or near ambient temperature at the beginning of destruction operations. In the Dynasafe SDC, the munition is inserted into an already hot, externally heated chamber. The high temperature of the chamber results in the deflagration or detonation of the munition’s explosive fill, if present, and destruction of the agent. This type of technology is called “hot” detonation.

Current plans call for shipping the noncontaminated rocket motors to an off-site facility for processing. However, the Army is considering destruction in an EDT at Blue Grass as an alternative. This approach would minimize the handling and transportation of these energetic-filled motors. Under current plans the shipping and firing tube (SFT) segments associated with the rocket motors would have to be removed from the motors and shipped to an off-site treatment, storage, and disposal facility (TSDF) that meets Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) requirements because the tubes contain high enough levels of polychlorinated biphenyls to be of regulatory concern.
