The PLC modem implements all the functions of the physical layer including modulation and coding. The second communications layer (data link layer) is also implemented within the modem including its MAC (Medium Access Control) and LLC (Logical Link Control) sublayers (according to the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) reference model, see for example [Walke99]). A PLC base station (master station) connects a PLC access system to its backbone network (Fig. 10). It realizes the connection between the backbone communications network and the powerline transmission medium.
