During the formation of the solar system, for instance, entire worlds collided with apocalyptic consequences.
Although the error at each step (caused by assuming a constant rate of change when actually it varies a little) is very small, you have to use an awful lot of steps. A big number times a small error need not be small, but carefully concocted methods keep the errors under control. The branch of mathematics known as numerical analysis is aimed at just this issue. It’s convenient to refer to such methods as ‘simulations’, reflecting the crucial role of the computer. It’s important to appreciate that you can’t solve a problem merely by ‘putting it on the computer’.
