Example text
When course members draw upon their own personal material to work with, we shall call the activity a personal role play. When they are invited to ‘be’ someone else, we call it a projected role play. A simple personal role play, using everyday material, is a non- threatening way to become familiar with this method. The brief to both partners should be simple and clear. For example: ‘Partner A is going to talk about the ups and downs of the past week. Partner B is going to paraphrase and summarise.
Family groups’ can work on their own, or with a tutor– observer or with the rest of the learning group observing as in the Fishbowl. In this case, understanding can be intensified through having one or two course members ‘double’ (for instructions on this, see page 53) an individual in the group in order to pick up particular aspects of that role. Group and linked role play enables course members to explore and understand the effects of emotions on interactions within the group. Additionally, a facilitator or counsellor role may be introduced if course members’ training includes couple or family therapy.
