Im Zuge der Vereinigung beider deutscher Staaten und der in diesem Zusammenhang geschlossenen völkerrechtlichen Verträge wurde die Nachkriegsordnung obsolet. Die ehemaligen Siegermäch­ te bestätigten der vergrößerten 'neuen' Bundesrepublik Deutschland ihre völ­ kerrechtliche Souveränität, und mit der Republik Polen wurden noch offene, insbesondere territoriale Fragen rechtlich verbindlich geregelt. So konnten die äußeren Aspekte der Vereinigung im Jahr 1990 unerwartet zügig und kon­ fliktfrei gelöst werden.
