A review of this material suggests that we should conclude with Edelmann and Connolly (1986) that ‘the speculation about the therapeutic value of adoption was unfounded’. Over the years, the concept of functional infertility has come to occupy a significant position in any discussion of the causes of infertility.
By this is meant either the inability to achieve and sustain an erection sufficient to achieve full penetration of the vagina, or premature ejaculation. In either case conception is unlikely to occur. Impotence has no necessary connection with fertility, in the sense that a man might well have semen within normal limits of fertility and yet be impotent. Indeed, this will normally be the case. However, it is often suggested that in the popular mind there is believed to be a close connection between the two.
The literature seems to discount the possibility of there frequently being found a physiological basis for the failure of orgasm, concentrating rather on the importance of psycho-social factors related to the development of attitudes to sex, early experience of sex, attitudes to the sexual partner, and the nature of the current sexual relationship(s) (Brecher and Brecher 1966).
