The answers depend on the approach used. The changes involved may be through an understanding of the way we unconsciously bury or repress our authentic feelings and thoughts, as in the psychodynamic approach. In the humanistic approach we are supported to understand that our defences are purposeful and served us at an earlier part of our lives, but are probably counter-productive or destructive to us now. Having an understanding of this process enables us to explore other choices of how we may want to live.

This means that a trained person gives skilled help to another person, to make it easier for them to explore their own options and find their own solutions. To give advice is generally considered in counselling to take something away from the client’s own potential for solving his own problems. Advising creates a dependency on the counsellor and undermines the client’s capacity for decision-making and autonomy. Giving advice can also prove to be a grave mistake, as you will know if you have ever given advice to someone who then finds that it was the wrong advice, and is furious with you for your pains.

This means that the patient does not know anything about the analyst. When we ‘don’t know something’ that we want to know, we are likely to fantasise to fill in the gaps.
