Transcultural training has shown promising developments in recent years. A number of courses have emerged in the past few years offering specialized/focused themes on cross-cultural counselling. A conference organized by UKCOSA (1996), for example, examined developments in cross-cultural theory and practice with respect to international edu cation. The conference was organized to provide a forum in which UK participants had opportunity to reflect upon and reassess their own approaches to transcultural issues and to learn more about recent trends in cross-cultural theory and practice in North America.
D'Ardenne and Mahtani (1989) list various practical problems for counsellors in the process of cross-cultural work ranging from use of Copyrighted Material 22 COUNSELLING IN A MULTICULTURAL SOCIETY appropriate forms of address to acceptable patterns of non-verbal com munication. More than this, they are argued to need sensitivity to their own attitudes. For clients too there can be cross-cultural hurdles to overcome. Not least of these may be the experience of being labelled and treated by white agencies which expect compliance to norms.
Sabnani et al. (1991) offer a comprehensive multicultural training model aimed at majority (white middle class) counselling trainees in the USA. The developmental training is promoted as improving on earlier stage models. This includes: 1 Pre-exposure/precontact. 2 Conflict. 3 Pro-minority / antiracism. 4 Retreat into white culture. S Redefinition and integration. The model retains echoes of conversion experience and is interestingly comparable to the black racial identity model of Cross (1971) discussed earlier.
