At the core of the sustainability concept is the realization of the interconnectedness of the world in time and in space, and the realization of how human actions may – given this interconnectedness – have unexpected consequences. Sustainability is about being responsible to this interconnectedness, and making decisions such that the various interconnected consequences of those decisions are taken into account. The concept of sustainability therefore can be understood as an overarching worldview recognizing the interconnectedness of ecological, social, and economic factors in human activities.
