To encourage minority parents to come, the first community meeting was held at one of the African American churches, an older wooden building located in a mixed neighborhood on the border of the main commercial area in the downtown. This site had been chosen by the task force to encourage African American citizens, who might otherwise find a public school inhospitable or intimidating, to attend.
