The underground portion of the WJPP facility is approximately 650 meters below the ground surface in massive natural deposits of the Salado Formation in southeastern New Mexico. Pure and argillaceous halite materials are present at the WIPP, together with clay seams, polyhalite beds, and anhydrite beds.
