A strong surface wind movement will disperse the pollutants relatively quickly; if the pollutants reach the stratosphere, they may be carried around the world before they disappear from the atmosphere. Local There have been many local air pollution situations that have been devastating. One of these occurred December 410, 1952, in London, England. On December 4 a high-pressure cell began to center on the city, shrouding it in several layers of clouds. From thousands of chimneys the unburned particles of coal floated into the atmosphere, and the smell of smoke was strong.
Sources of Nitric Oxides More than 90 percent of the nitric oxides (NOX) emitted into the atmosphere comes from human sources, and the single major source is the combustion of fossil fuels. 5 million tons of NOX are emitted annually into the atmosphere. Coal contains about 1 percent nitrogen by weight. When high-temperature combustion occurs, the nitrogen combines with oxygen to form NOX. About 55 percent of NOX emissions comes from power plants and industrial and residential users of coal. The remaining 45 percent comes from mobile sources such as motor vehicles, planes, and trains.
