In this particular scale, to give only a few examples, the death of a spouse is given a stress value of 100 points, divorce 73, marriage 50, retirement 45, down to change in residence 20, Christmas 12 and minor violations of the law 11. Although this approach clearly has some value – without any doubt death, divorce or house moving clearly have the potential to be stressproducing events – it is also equally clear that no two individuals react in exactly the same way to any given event. An event which is perceived as a challenge by one person may be experienced by another as much more of a threatening experience.

In some cases some stress evaluations have been 38 Experiential training undertaken using a standardised stress instrument (several are available – the leader should choose the one with which he or she is most comfortable). The workshops have varied from between one and three days, and all have taken place during normal working time. To begin the afternoon we regularly employ a high-energy fun game known as ‘Mixed Veg’ or ‘Railway Stations’. Each person takes the name of a vegetable (or railway station). In a circle, seats are provided for all but one participant (a volunteer), who stands in the middle. This person calls out the names of three or more vegetables (or stations). These persons have to change seats without allowing the person in the middle to grab a seat.
