When there is writing from them, moreover, it necessarily avails itself of the conceptual vocabulary of the day, regardless of the experience itself. This is then Foucault’s difficulty here: on the one hand, a plausible and deep intuition that discourse is constitutive of differentiated experiences; on the other, a lack of any confirming evidence. Madness and Politics Foucault was disappointed not to reach a wider audience with the History of Madness. However, it proved to be something of a political time-bomb.
With madness, we have a peculiar problem in this regard, a problem that bedevils the discipline of psychology. Madness is an experience, yet we are required to identify it by non-experiential markers. And as an experience, it can scarcely be untouched by historical changes. The way mad people are treated might not be the sole cause of madness, but it nevertheless drastically alters the experience they have. What actions see one categorised as mad change historically. The kind of behaviour people exhibit varies historically.
Madness is, in this sense, Foucault’s key work. Most of Foucault’s other major works can be understood as sequels to it. The Birth of the Clinic is one most obviously, coming directly after The History of Madness and dealing with medicine in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, expanding from the analysis of psychiatry involved in Madness. So too is The Order of Things, dealing with transformations in academic knowledge at the same time as The History of Madness, extending that dimension of the book.
