Why is that? One reason is that the nature of the problems we do face today will change so quickly that by the time we finally act, our solutions are obsolete. We would be solving yesterday’s problems. That is one of the consequences of any conceptual delay. For another thing, solutions interact, so that one course of action to solve Problem A might make Problem B that much worse—or might create a new Problem C. The implementation phase requires constant attention and adjustments. At a more fundamental level, however, language of “solving” problems—alone or together—suggests that eventually the problems go away.

So, it is equally essential for self-awareness, to know what we do not believe, inasmuch as disbelief is as defining as belief. The odd thing, of course, is that in order to contemplate either our beliefs or our disbeliefs, we must render them as ideas, holding them out at arm’s length, returning them back to the surface for closer scrutiny. Ortega (2002) wrote, “that we only adequately understand what something is to us when it is not a reality to us but an idea…” (p. 197). Perhaps a brief analogy will help make this point.
