He had travelled cross-continent in the back of a lorry from his home in Afghanistan. Upon arrival he was unable to speak English and was illiterate in his own language. When he left home his father had been missing for some time, and since his arrival in the UK he had lost all contact with his family. As an unaccompanied minor he had been granted discretionary leave to remain in the UK until his eighteenth birthday (Immigration and Asylum Act 1999). He was defined as a child in need and was accommodated in foster care under section 20 of the Children Act 1989.
The concept of an asylum seeker being ‘not conducive’ to the public good is used as justification for deportation (Montgomery, 2004). While Ehsan was not at risk of immediate deportation, the fact that he had been convicted of a serious offence in the UK will impact upon the Home Office decision when he reaches 18. Although the state of affairs in Afghanistan is constantly featured in the media, I was aware of the need to gain a greater insight into Ehsan’s experience, which led me to more in-depth reading about the political/ cultural/religious divisions within this country.
My own history of disadvantage and later social and employment choices, has exposed me to hostile, unpredictable and risky situations but little that fazes me. I would be considered resilient, practical and courageous, entering dangerous and emotionally-charged situations feeling calm and able to sort things out. However, I have begun to compare this with situations that I don’t handle well; where I felt exposed and vulnerable and have also begun to question ‘how’ and ‘why’ I sort things out. I can see links between my personal coping styles, professional practice and the way I approached the observations.
