Twenty musk ox from Alaska were reintroduced in 1975 and their population too has increased to more than 800. Wrangel was not firmly added to the world’s known geography until 1867, hidden as it was in the vastness of the icy Arctic wastes. On the shoreline rocks there are groups of black guillemots, black as printers’ ink and matching the rocks, given away only by the bold blaze of white on their summer wings and their whimsical scarlet feet. Above the tideline and around a long lagoon on the narrowest neck of the island (a second lagoon is virtually dry in summer) small colonies of Arctic terns have their nests and resolutely harass any intruders approaching their territories. There are pairs of ringed plover too, long distance travellers who cross the ocean to find sanctuary for breeding on Jan Mayen’s lonely beaches.

At the eastern end, on Punta Delgada, is the Allegranza lighthouse. In the 1970s we were fortunate in tracking down the last two keepers who manned the light for twenty years from 1949, before it became automatic, and they were able to give a clear account of the status of many of the birds on Allegranza in their time. So far as the black oystercatcher was concerned, they were very familiar with the fact that it had been found regularly on the island in the past, although they never saw it themselves.
