It has lived at a high level of well-being. From the perspective of the butterfly's world, it has had a good life. Even when we consider such simple animal organisms as one-celled protozoa, it makes perfectly good sense to a biologically informed person to speak of what benefits or harms them, what environmental changes are to their advantage or disadvantage, and what physical circumstances are favorable or unfavorable to them. A may be a better tennis player than B, but B may be a better poet than A, and both may be very poor carpenters. This kind of variation, by way of contrast, does not occur in respect of the inherent worth of people. This is one of the fundamental ways in which the concept of merit differs from that of inherent worth. If we regard persons as possessing inherent worth as persons, then they all possess the same worth, since it is their simple personhood itself which is the ground of their worth.
