46-7). The development of the paradigm of empowerment and the working-out of its application to the many different areas of social work, are processes which are occurring simultaneously. During the 1960s and 1970s, the treatment paradigm dominated social work. The word 'treatment' sometimes, but not invariably, meant the application of medical terminology of diagnosis and prescription. Even apart from this particular version of the treatment paradigm, the assumption was widespread that professionals knew best what would benefit people.

The advantages of this exercise of clarification, though, are in terms of the development of knowledge about one's preferred personal learning styles and learning needs, as well as in the possible increase in self-confidence which may result.
