Micro approaches Both functionalism and Marxism are macro, structural theories which are concerned with the way in which society constrains individuals’ lives. There are a range of approaches that are critical of the idea that structures influence and shape what individuals do. These are generically referred to as micro, social action perspectives and are concerned with the concept of ‘agency’ or the capacity of individuals to act upon the environment. The German sociologist Max Weber was significant in contributing to a theory of social action and was influential in the development of many subsequent schools of thought that shared basic assumptions about the primacy of the individual in creating society.
For example, the term ‘post-Second World War’ is used to refer to the period after the Second World War. In a similar vein, the term postmodernism is used to denote a period, an era, after ‘modernism’ – hence postmodernism. It might, therefore, be a good idea to begin by looking at the key characteristics of ‘modernism’, and then we will be in a better position to understand and assess the changes and developments which supposedly led to the development of a ‘postmodern’ society. It is perhaps worth pointing out that many of the claims made by advocates of postmodernism have not remained uncontested, not least because they challenge the foundations of many key sociological thinkers.
