At the institutional and systematic level, then, multicultural education, or indeed any other educational initiative that depends upon decisions which transcend the level of individual consumer preference, will not happen —unless the market dictates that they should. By so adopting the logic of the market, then, value judgements about what is good for communities, regions, or the country as a whole, are simply ruled out. Educational policy, including multicultural education policy, is neutered at the level where it probably has its greatest effect.

Everything else being equal, schools have reason to provide this learning and, more generally, to validate the individual’s attachment to her own culture. That is, schools have reason to respect the cultural dimension of their students’ identity, and to teach other students to do so as part of their values education program.
