A committee brings the benefits of many minds working together and increasing co-operation, but encourages doubt and delay at vital stages of the robbery. This is the way that it proved during the Great Train Robbery. Soon it was decided by ‘the committee’ that the Robbery would have to take place between Rugby, where the train made its last cash pickup, and the London suburbs, where the Robbery might be overlooked from local houses and flats. Following weeks of extensive research it was decided that the perfect venue was near Cheddington in Buckinghamshire, where the train could be stopped at signals at Sears Crossing and, following the uncoupling of the engine and the target HVP carriage, the train could be driven to an embankment and lonely isolated road at Bridego Bridge.
As the robbers decamped from the train, one of them made their first mistake by telling the Post Office staff not to move for thirty minutes, which caused the Police to believe that the robbers were hiding within thirty miles of the scene of the robbery. The robbers had dressed themselves in military uniforms and disguised the Land Rovers and an Austin Loadstar lorry to look like military vehicles, due to the number of military camps in the area and the fact that this would allow them to move unnoticed and to exercise authority over anybody who hindered their escape.
Bill Boal was tasked with experimenting with ways to uncouple carriages and soon became proficient in this. Around January 1963 the leaders of the two gangs got together for a meeting, where it was decided that the preparations for the train robbery had been completed with Reynolds’ gang, now known locally as the ‘South West Gang’ having raised the funds that would be required for such an operation, and Cordrey’s gang, now known as the ‘South Coast Raiders’ for their success in robbing trains, having become skilful and experienced in stopping and uncoupling trains.
