Lack of adequate training is harmful in two ways: it makes for more operator errors and system delays and it can also lead to ineffective use of facilities because of lack of confidence. Systems can be condemned or abandoned as being 'no good ' because the people who operate them do not understand them. 9 Stand-by arrangements Making arrangements for 'stand-by' equipment to which work can be transferred in case of need is an option which the microcomputer user may consider. This might be by arrangement with the supplier, as part of a service deal, or as a mutual help scheme with another user of compatible equipment, or simply by providing reserve capacity in the installation.
The documentation to be provided and the use which may be made of it should be shown clearly in the contract. Documentation related to operation of hardware and software, and to modification of software, is every bit as important as the equipment itself. Manuals must be treated as documents of value. 9 Checklist of contract points Bearing in mind that the material significance of contract questions must relate to the size of the project, these are some of the questions which should be asked by a potential purchaser of microsystems when checking contract terms: * Are all items of equipment and/or software clearly listed and identified, including equipment and item model references, consumables and software documentation?
Intelligent design of menus, prompts, form-filling and other techniques for screen displays can save much of the time which is so often wasted in abortive attempts to run computer systems when incorrect commands or responses are given. It will also help to reduce data errors which might otherwise corrupt files or information reports. It is all too common to find even skilled computer professionals, faced with some unaccountable interruption to a computer task, wasting considerable time in trying to unravel the reason why 'the computer won't talk to me' or 'it has never done anything like that before' at the terminal.
