2004a). Here we demonstrated that relative position sensitivity is reduced in developmental dyslexic readers compared to age-matched control readers, and that sensitivity to the symbols task predicts individual variability in contextual reading. Similarly, in another study (Pammer et al, 2004b), we demonstrate that the symbols task is correlated with both single-word and contextual reading in children. The implications of these findings is that subtle visual impairments in reading-impaired children may cause a subjective uncertainty about letter position when they read, making it difficult to establish stable orthographic to phonological mappings.
