However, many scholars within the field of critical security studies engage discourse more broadly in relation to an appreciation of the constitutive role of knowledge or rationalities of government (see Huysmans 1998). This lies in contrast to what might be defined as ‘thinner’ constructivist approaches that conceive discourse more narrowly in relation to terms such as rhetoric, narrative or speech. Indeed, scholars of securitisation as a speech act have focused attention on the contextual dimensions that render any separation of discourse and practice problematic, such as through looking to the broader political landscape in the context of which speech acts are assessed by an audience (Balzacq 2005).
