In the 1920s, as the Great Depression was creeping into America, these New Orleans mansions were becoming too much of a financial burden for the owners. Like many others, the mansion that was to become the Castle Inn was converted to a transient rooming house. The place changed ownership several times, until the 1950s, when the Allison family took over. It would stay in the Allison family until 1998, when George Allison sold it to Andrew Craig and Karen Bacharach. The new owners renamed the mansion the 1891 Castle Inn and began extensive cosmetic work on the property.
In 1946, Wayne and Dorothy Mackin bought the Imperial Hotel from George Long’s widow. I spoke to Stephen Mackin, who was born in Cripple Creek in 1947 and spent the first seven years of his life living in the same apartment George Long and his family lived in. During the time the Mackin family owned the Imperial, they worked to bring theater back to Cripple Creek, both for the cultural aspect as well as for a business draw for their hotel. By 1953, the Mackins were producing turn-of-the-century melodramas on Imperial’s stage.
In 1906, a stately manor was constructed in the fort for Superintendent Captain Richard Deane. Deane felt the quarters used by the previous superintendent weren’t good enough for his wife, Martha. ” Martha Deane never got to see the new home. She died of illness in the town of Lethbridge in southern Alberta. By 1914, the fort closed, the land was sold to the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, and Captain Deane retired to his native England. Grand Trunk tore down all of the Fort Calgary buildings with the exception of the Deane House, which was spared to become the station agent’s quarters.
