What stands behind the methods and curriculum and how it animates the schooling will be the focus of succeeding chapters. We are in a school of life all the time. New forms are developing not only for normal children and teachers K through 12, but for the handicapped and the aging. Out of those forms come new approaches for our human work in agriculture, industry, medicine, art, and economics. The schooling of the child is a part of the reschooling of society.
Sculpture is part of the history lesson because it is a part of history, as are the other arts. In the early grades, all the children learn to knit and to crochet. In the first grade, they knit a scarf. In the second, they crochet a recorder bag. In the third, they begin cross-stitch and running stitch. Soon boys and girls alike are knitting argyle socks, ski caps, and mittens. They make a shirt. Woodworking is another craft: carving a spoon, a boat, or a picture frame. Handwork will be gone into in more detail in a later chapter.
Because of the point of view toward painting in these lower grades, the children's work has a similarity. Primary colors are preferred. The little children learn to mix the primary colors, for example, using yellow and blue to make green. The emergence of the new "mixed" color is usually dramatized in a story told before the lesson. Black and white tend to be avoided until the higher grades, because they are considered to be more abstract and not as living for a small child. The children are also encouraged to paint with their colors and not to draw outlines and fill them in.
