Hitler now put into effect his plans – formulated the previous October – for a military administration of the Low Countries and France; on May 15, he announced that Wehrmacht General Alexander von Falkenhausen would serve as military commander for both Belgium and the Netherlands. Falkenhausen’s reign proved exceptionally short-lived, however, as a mere few days later, Hitler changed course. Instead of a military administration, the Netherlands would see a civilian administration under the authority of Dr.
Technically, “Holland” refers to the provinces of North and South Holland, but because of the historical signiicance and population density of cities located in these provinces, the name is often used to connote the country as a whole. Similarly, Hollander refers to a Dutch man or woman. In my use of these and other words, I have tried to retain original usage but at the same time avoid potential confusion for an English-speaking audience.
