Sebastian had no idea what was in these boxes, for Abercrombie had packed them. But having been home a month, he couldn‟t imagine these crates and trunks contained anything he might need now. Still, why not go through them? It wasn‟t as if he had anything else to do. He gave a nod, and the footman departed. Sebastian removed his jacket, unfastened his cuff links, rolled up his shirtsleeves, and set to work. The trunks were filled with old clothes. The first two crates held books, and the third various stationery supplies.
He said at once, but the sick twist in his guts belied his denial. “I saw the play last night. I wasn‟t intending to go, but at the last minute I changed my mind. ” Sebastian shouted before he could stop himself. He twisted in his chair, jabbing a finger over his shoulder toward the door behind him. “I didn‟t need that fire-haired, serpent-tongued spinster to tell me Girl with a Red Handbag is trivial, and trite, and just plain silly! I knew that already, but I had to agree to put the thing into production.
A tingle ran up her spine, an awareness—not of danger, but of something else, something that made her flustered and nervous, but it wasn‟t fear. He‟d asked her a question, but she couldn‟t seem to remember what it was. He was staring at her, his mouth curved in that slight, one-sided smile. He thought her hair was pretty. She had a shapely bum. She felt the color in her face deepening. She tried to speak. “I…umm…I…” But her voice trailed off as his lashes lowered and he fixed his gaze on her mouth.
