Page 49 5 Women and Their Learning Styles Helen Havlik In describing their lives, women commonly [talk] about voice and silence: "speaking up," "speaking out," "being silenced," "not being heard,'' "really listening," "really talking," "words as weapons," "feeling deaf and dumb," "having no words," "saying what you mean," "listening to be heard," and so on in an endless variety of connotations all having to do with sense of mind, self-worth, and feelings of isolation from or connection to others .

Page 42 While material on spirituality has been written through the ages that is both profoundly challenging and insistently balanced, such views have not often been reflected in the more popular expressions of Christianity. In expressions of Christianity that have been heavily wed to societal norms, the church has upheld a neat double-standard in the area of spirituality. The ideal expression of the Christian life for a man is to be an active defender of and partner in the very mission of God.

This new vision of Jesus and the women around him has become a source of security and strength in my life. Security because now I know that even though the Christian church has been permeated with patriarchal and sexist influences, the original church that Jesus envisioned was against these influences. The Jesus movement intended to be an equal place for all of the children of God. The present church should strive to be such an equal place too. This new vision is also a source of strength because it empowers me to continue the journey toward the wholeness, the basileia, that Jesus designed for me as a woman.
