Some respond that it is not the client's business. Others believe that giving some personal information about their own family and interests enhances the working relationship. Again, there is not a lot of research on this subject in relation to involuntary clients. Researching this area is difficult because selfdisclosure seems to be so dependent on the particular context of interviews. Dean Hepworth and his colleagues (2002), in a brief review of social work literature on self-disclosure, suggest that the results are so mixed that little can be concluded from them, although they do suggest that the cold, detached, distant therapist may be particularly unhelpful.
They are likely to have serious problems, to cause further harm to others and to make demands on resources. In addition, at least in the corrections area, there is evidence that high-risk offenders in particular benefit from supervision and other rehabilitation programs. Don Andrews and Jim Bonta and their colleagues (1990, 2003) point to the importance of workers focusing on high-risk clients in work in corrections. High-risk clients are those who are assessed as likely to reoffend, whereas low-risk clients are assessed as unlikely to reoffend.
It certainly seems that a rigorous approach to case management which monitors the work done by other agencies, and which involves them in planning as suggested by Jack Rothman (1991), is likely to be more successful. This issue is discussed further in Chapter 5. Work with families There is a body of research which suggests that work with families can· be effective in changing the behaviour of involuntary clients and in improving family functioning. This appears to be particularly so if the work with families is based on the principles of effective practice discussed in this chapter.
