As much as I could have attempted to ignore emotions, my very motivation to keep going was not intellectual but emotional: I felt moved and obligated to share their story. Lastly, the concern that was most difficult to balance was how to convey these stories in a way that would balance the need to articulate people’s experiences but not be interjected with my own comments or assumptions about how it felt. Even writing this I am wrestling with how this could ever be satisfactorily managed. The story needed to be narrated, but as I wrote it, I tried to leave my voice quiet as the participants explain their lives.
